How to Reduce Basement Flooding Risk Before the Next Storm

Most basement flooding risk factors are addressable — grading, drainage, and sump reliability, not luck.

Basement flooding usually comes down to a combination of factors rather than one single cause, which is actually good news: it means there are several places to intervene before the next heavy rain, rather than one all-or-nothing fix.

Check Your Grading

The ground around your foundation should slope away from the house — generally at least 6 inches of drop over the first 10 feet. If it slopes toward the foundation instead, water is being directed exactly where you don't want it, regardless of how good your gutters or sump pump are.

Inspect Gutters and Downspouts

  • Clean gutters at least twice a year — clogged gutters overflow directly against the foundation.
  • Extend downspouts so they discharge at least 4-6 feet from the foundation, not right at the base of the wall.
  • Check for disconnected or crushed downspout extensions, especially after lawn work or landscaping changes.

Look at Window Wells

Basement window wells without proper covers or drainage can fill with water during heavy rain and leak in around the window frame. A well cover and confirming the well has a functioning drain (often connected to the same drain tile system as the foundation) addresses this directly.

Confirm Your Sump System Is Reliable

See our sump pump maintenance guide for a full checklist — a well-maintained system with a working battery backup handles the majority of groundwater intrusion scenarios that would otherwise flood a basement.

Consider a French Drain or Interior Drain Tile for Recurring Issues

If flooding is a recurring problem despite addressing the above, an interior or exterior drain tile system connected to a sump pump is a more involved but more permanent solution, generally requiring a specialized contractor to install correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can landscaping mulch or beds near the foundation contribute to flooding?

Yes, if they interrupt the slope away from the foundation or if mulch beds retain water against the foundation wall rather than letting it drain away.
